So, for the past 6 months I've been telling myself that THIS month, we're getting rid of Jacks pacifer. ( He only takes it when he sleeps, but have you noticed the overbit on this kid already?) It hasn't happened. I expected I'd have him off that, out of his crib and potty trained before Theo was born. The potty training was so seemless I thought the other two would be no problem either... He placidly sleeps caged in his crib with that scummy old red and yellow pacifer between his lips every night. We've been talking for some time about trading in his pacifer for a really cool toy, and bought him a big boy bed months ago. Instead of him warming up to these changes, he has now taken to praying for them. As best as I can remember, last nights prayer went like this: Heavenly Fader. Fank you for dis day, for all my blessings. Fank you for my family. Fank you for my pacifer. Fank you for dad, mom and Feo. Fanks for my pacifer again, AND my crib. In the name... How sad to have to take away the things that comfort and secure him. Two things he has had and used to get to sleep every night since birth (nearly). The task gets tougher every day. No! he doesn't want to be a big boy and sleep in a big boy bed and No! he doesn't care if Bryce (his cousin who he looks up to) doesn't use a pacifer. I do realize I am in control of this situation and I am the one who will make this change happen (or not) AND he will still love me when I take these things away, but why does it have to be so hard?

I can't relate to the crib problem but Jackson was three before he gave up his binky if that makes you feel any better. It didn't ruin his teeth and now he doesn't even remember taking a binky. We traded it in for some "really cool" spiderman sheets. He had trouble for one night and then he was done. I thought it would take a lot longer because he was SO attached to that thing. I swear we spent a fortune on binkies and I think he had a secret stash somewhere. Good luck! (And, yes he will still love you.)
Oh Jennah I feel your pain! We're going through the same thing with Andrew. Good luck!
Jennah. Ian was the same way he was 3. I was so embarrassed. I vividly remember one day the month he turned 3 when he decided all on his own that he wasn't going to wear diapers anymore, and he wanted a big boy bed AND no binky. And that was that. It will happen. Don't worry.
Oh, Jennah, good luck! Who ever realizes that motherhood is not just reading stories and teaching kids to not hit? It's so much trickier than that! Yes, Jack will stil love you. And he'll probably adjust faster than you think. He's so great. Please hug him for us!

just saw your most recent addition to your 100 things list. pat saw tom waits when he was in high school and he says it was THE best concer that he has ever been to. although thanks to me (unfortunately), he's never seen elvis costello in concert.
who's the big tom waits fan: you, blake or both? have you seen "the tiger in the snow"? it has a good tom waits performance in it and we're loving the song from it lately.
if you need an idea to get rid of the pacifier, just clip off a teeny tiny tiny teeny bit each day before you give it to him and eventually he won't be able to keep it in his mouth because there will be nothing left and he will hate it and throw it! it worked with my brother brian, who knows, maybe it'll work for you!
